Advertising Agencies

Advertising Age Datacenter - Offers reports and rankings of leading international advertising agencies. 

Advertising Agencies - Listing of agencies from the Wikipedia.

Agency ComPile - Interesting U.S & Canadian directory that allows for flexible advanced searches by such variables as agency name, by clients and the agencies that handle them, agency type, geographic area and several more.

 

Advertising and Slogan Examples

A.C. Nielsen JR. Online Research Center - Claims to have a database with information on over 11,000 television commercials. However, the search function is somewhat difficult to use when it comes to searching for commercials.  Even if you find the information regarding a particular ad users will still need  to contact and possibly visit the Museum of Broadcast Communications where the research center is housed.

Ad Access - Extremely interesting site from Duke University.  Contains more than 7000 US and Canadian print ads from 1911-1955 in five categories Beauty and Hygiene, Radio, Television, Transportation, and World War II. Includes pictures and background information.

AdAge Top 100 Campaigns - One site's opinion of the top advertising event of the 20th Century.

AdBusters - Offers alternative ideas about what the responsibilities of the media should be.  Includes spoof ads, magazine articles and other information that is often counter to prevailing ideas.

AdEater - This site's Film Library offers free access to several thousand television ads from around the world.  Has searchable database that can be sorted by country, year, keyword, brand and more.

AdFlip - Good resource that once was free but now requires a fee.  Has a searchable database of hundreds of print ads from the 1940s to present day.  Search by multiple categories including year, brand and product type.

AdSlogans - Has several good sections with samples and historic advertising including a Hall of Fame listing of top ad slogans from years-gone-by voted on by industry folk and a Directory of links to additional historic advertising sites. 

Clio Awards - The site includes information on general advertising media and methods as well as materials on the "Academy Awards" for advertising.

Emergence of Advertising in America - Also from Duke University, this collection of ads covers a period from 1850-1920 and contains over 9,000 images.  Nice search feature and timeline also included.

Super Bowl Ads - Fee-based site that allows users to watch past Super Bowl ads.

TV Party - This site is mostly a fee-based television programming history site, however, there are several free pages of old TV ads including video of Most Outrageous Ads, 60s commercials and famous car commercials.  

U.S. Library of Congress - Business Collection - Contains numerous excellent collections and images dealing with advertising and marketing history including:

Webby Awards  - Annual best-of-the-web awards for over 30 categories. While technically these awards are not strictly for advertising it can offer some insight into marketing, advertising and promotional activity that may be working on the web.

 

Direct Marketing

Direct Marketing News - Web site from the publishers of Direct Marketing Magazine.

U.S. Postal Service *Has several features that are of interest to direct mailers including:

Business Mail 101 - Offers a tutorial, basics instructions and glossary on how to do effective direct mail.

Zip Code Finder - Enter the city and state and the appropriate zip codes are displayed.

 

Direct Marketing: Mailing Lists

GreatLists.com - Free service (though must register) that is essentially a directory for locating business-to-business mailing lists.  Includes searchable database of lists that can be broken down by industry. Also FAQs page offers useful information about using mailing lists.

Mailing & Fulfillment Service Association - National trade association for the mailing services industry.

mIn's Direct Marketing Network - Database of direct marketing suppliers searchable by state and category of service such as list brokers, printers, and direct marketing ad agencies.

 

Internet Marketing

Interactive Advertising Bureau - Not-for-profit trade association focusing on advertising issues across all interactive formats. Site contain regularly updated reports, including industry ad revenue, statistics on industry trends and other good basic internet advertising information.

Internet Advertising Report - A frequently updated online news service from Mecklermedia.

ClickZ - Rich & Streaming Media - Weekly articles on rich media. 

Interactive Advertising Bureau - Trade group site resources include basic banner design standards, including examples, glossary, and also provides rich media resources that include voluntary guidelines and also several examples of rich media.

Microsoft's Ad Products - While this is a promotional page describing the ad products that Microsoft accepts on their sites, it does provide examples of many rich media ad formats. (If link takes you to the main Marketing page for MSN, click on the Ad Products button.)
 

Public Relations

Basics of PR - AllAboutPublicRelations - Offers a number of PR resources including short how-to articles, PR glossary and career information.

Council of Public Relations Firms - Find several resources from this trade group site including a ranking of PR companies on a number of criteria including world wide  revenue and revenue by industry sector, research papers and other publications.

Public Relations from Peerspectives - Several very good, detailed article that discusses all areas of creating a PR plan, handling media issues and other topics.

The Museum of Public Relations - Though currently somewhat limited in its scope, this site has the potential to offer insights into some of the early pioneers in the PR field.

Online Public Relations - Excellent, all-around PR site with hundreds of well- organized links.  Strong areas include well presented listing of media sources, numerous links to PR resources and listings of PR job search firms.

 

Public Relations: PR Release Service & Wire Services

 

Associated Press - Site of top international news service, their FAQ section will offer suggestions for press releases.

Business Wire - Leading provider of company released news and PR.

Collegiate Presswire - Focus is on offering news releases to college and university news media.

Medialink - Main focus is on multimedia PR.  Site resources include glossary of broadcasting terms, survey information (generally in their favor) and other material that may be of use to those not familiar with this form of PR.

PR Newswire - A premier site for PR professionals and others.  Contains several databases searchable by company, industry and more.  Also includes resource section for those involved in PR.

PR Web - An alternative service offering free press releases (though it seeks contributions) and a searchable database of previous PR releases.

U.S. Newswire - Press release service targeted exclusively to political, public policy and other government related news.

Virtual Press Office - Online service targeted to the high-tech, health care and other industries whose primary business is to help companies reach media that cover trade shows, conferences and events.

 

Consumer Behavior

Changing Minds - 300 pages on how we make decisions.

Food & Brand Lab - Univ. of Ill. *Pretty good information can be found here related to consumer research, consumer panels and shopping behavior.

Consumer Psychologist - Prof at USC provides overview on consumer behavior.

Packaging

Packaging Digest - Covers the packaging market place. There a tons of links to related associations and contract packagers.

Packexpo.com - A portal catering to the packaging industry. Their categories range from marketplace, suppliers, news center and research to discussions and calenders/shows.

Packaging World - Another packaging publication or e-zine offering a wealth of information, articles and industry news.

Packaging Network - A community for the industry professionals. Also available are industry news and resources.

Du Pont Packaging Technical Library - Du Pont's technical library offers various conference papers, presentations, reports and other technical stuff related to packaging.

Brand Packaging - Magazine focused on packaging issues related to packaged goods. It covers brand packaging strategies -- consumer preferences, market patterns, new packages, international developments. Requires registration.
